The Crosshouse Primary School WeeWalk

WildHearts WeeWalks came to Crosshouse Primary School on May 6th for a day of adventure and fun aimed at promoting healthy eating and active lifestyles.  The turn-out was simply fantastic, with over 240 pupils taking part with their teachers.

The younger Crosshouse pupils  followed a 1 mile route around their school grounds, with primary 3s and above tackling a longer 2 mile route around their local area, and were entertained along the way by a host of fun characters, including a giant monkey, bear, tiger and in keeping with the healthy theme a huge strawberry! The cute and colourful characters, played by volunteers from Westwood Church and pupils’ parents were on hand to dish out healthy snacks, helping the ‘WeeWalkers’ to re-fuel and learn unique ways to get their 5 A Day.   Local gym Fitness First also helped to get  ‘WeeWalkers’ warmed up through a fun aerobics session lead by manager Darren.  And, as well as getting active with their friends at the event, participating children were encouraged to adopt healthier eating habits in the run up to the WeeWalk by following an eye catching WildHearts healthy eating chart.

WildHearts founder, Mick Jackson, was delighted by how the event went.  He said:

“WildHearts have held successful WeeWalks across Scotland but it has been very special bringing the event to East Kilbride. It was fantastic to see so many kids take part at the Crosshouse WeeWalk and they absolutely loved meeting the WeeWalks characters and collecting their healthy snacks.  Particularly popular amongst the kids was Marco the Monkey!  WeeWalks aim to promote healthy lifestyles in a fun way that kids of all ages can really relate to and it’s simply wonderful that Crosshouse Primary School shares our determination to make Scotland a healthier place.  The children have also worked extremely hard at fundraising for WildHearts and their determination and generosity is a credit to both the school and their teachers."

WildHearts also aimed to show the Crosshouse pupils how they can make a difference in the world and become ‘Global Citizens’ by encouraging them to raise funds for their micro-finance projects in the developing world.  WildHearts tackle global poverty by providing micro-loans and business training to some of the world’s poorest people, enabling them to work their way out of poverty, support their families and send their children to school. WildHearts microloans are typically repaid and relent three times a year, so the Crosshouse pupils will continue to help more people work their way out of poverty every year, creating a lasting legacy for the school.
