WolfTrek FAQs

Answers to the most frequently asked WolfTrek questions.

How do I register?

Registration for the 2012 WolfTrek is available via our sister website WildHeartsEvents.com Simply click here to register now!

How much does it cost to take part?

Taking part in the full 45 mile WolfTrek costs £75 per person, which includes energy snacks and refreshments during the event, an awesome WolfTrek t-shirt, medal and goody bag. Relay and Midnight March participants register for £30.  Your registration fee also covers first aid and safety cover, insurance, radio coverage, marshal provisions and event facilities, so its very important that participants also aim to fundraise for WildHearts.

Is there a fundraising target?

Yes there is.  Part of the WolfTrek challenge is pushing yourself to raise (or totally smash!) the fundraising target of £150 per person for WildHearts.  WildHearts provide micro-finance to people in the developing world, enabling them to set up small businesses and work their own way out of poverty.  Find out more here.  We make fundraising for WildHearts really simple, by giving each team their own unique online sponsorship page when they register. Teams can personalise their pages and add their own team photo and message. We also email participants sponsor forms that can be printed too.

Can I fundraise for another charity?

No. The WolfTrek is organised and run by WildHearts to raise funds for our own projects and it is not possible to raise funds for any other charities. No exceptions will be made to this.

Can I find out more about the WolfTrek or WildHearts through social media?

Absolutely! You can follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/wildheartsinaction or Twitter at www.twitter.com/wildheartsteam or join the WolfTrek Facebook Group here

How big does my team have to be?

We recommend that participants take part in teams of 3 or more. This is to ensure you have company on the route and helps keep you safe – if you were to e.g. twist an ankle during the event one of your team members can stay with you whilst the other goes to alert the nearest marshal.  If you want to take part but don’t have 2 other team members please contact us at info@wildheartsinaction.org and we will buddy you up with another team. Alternatively you could join the WolfTrek Facebook Group  and ask to join a team there.

Can we change/add team members after we register?

Yes provided that you contact us by emailing info@wildheartsinaction.org by Friday July 27th 2012.  If you have a team-mate that wants to withdraw from the event completely but you do not have anyone to replace them please also email us.  Please be aware though that registration fees are non-refundable unless accompanied by a doctor’s note in light of illness or injury, or in the case of exceptional personal circumstances.

Can some of our team members do the full 45 mile WolfTrek and other team members do the Wolf Relay or Midnight March?

Yes.  You’ll be able to indicate who is doing which part of the event when you register.  All three events begin at the same time so you’ll be able to walk together.

How much training do I have to do?

The WolfTrek is a tough event so it is important that you are fit and ready to take on the challenge.  However with the right training and preparation anyone can achieve the 45 miles! The more training you and your team do in the months leading up to the WolfTrek, the more likely you will all cross the finish line together.  This can be a mixture of walking/running outdoors, gym work and general aerobic exercise.  We send participants a Training Guide as soon as they sign up and your local gym may well be able to help develop a tailored training programme for you too.  It doesn’t matter if you have never done anything like this before!

How fast do we have to complete the route?

You have 24 hours to complete the whole route.  The time taken to complete each section varies widely depending on the pace/fitness of individual team members.  As a rough guide though most teams complete each of the 3 sections in 5-7 hours, averaging 15-21 hours to complete the whole 45 mile route.  The course record is 6 hours and 52 minutes!

Where and when does the event start?

The Wolf Trek begins in Forres at 4pm on Saturday 4th August at Forres Academy. All participants and team members are required to sign in at the start between 2.30 and 3.30pm regardless of whether they are doing the full 45 mile trek, the relay or the Midnight March.

How do we get to and from the event?

If you do not have a support team (more on this below) or someone to drop you off/pick you up and will be making your own way to the event we recommend that you leave your car at the finish line on Cairngorm Mountain BEFORE the event starts.  We will be running a bus from the finish line to the start line at around 2pm on the day of the event, at charge of £6 per person.  By leaving your car at the finish line it means that it will be waiting for you at the end of the event and you’ll be able to leave whenever you like. We will email participants in July 2012 to enquire if they would like to book on to the bus.

If you are travelling to the event by public transport, and are planning to stay overnight somewhere before or after the trek, we recommend you base yourself in Aviemore, near the WolfTrek Finish Line, so that you can also get the WolfTrek bus from Cairngorm Mountain to the start line on Saturday afternoon. There is a regular public bus from Aviemore to Cairngorm Mountain that takes around 22 minutes. To get back to your hotel/train/bus when you finish the event you will be able to get a taxi, share a lift with another WolfTrek participant/support team/marshal or get the public bus after 8am.

Do we need a support team?

Having a support team is optional. The role of the support team is to meet you at the designated rest-stops and finish line with food, changes of clothes etc. Support teams will need to have their own vehicle.  We will be issuing WolfTrek Maps and info for Support Teams in July, including full directions/locations for the Rest Stops.  It is perfectly possible to complete the WolfTrek without a support team.

We’re doing the team relay. How do we get between check points?

Some teams use a support car and driver to transport team members between relay change over points.  Others use the team members themselves as drivers – i.e. The team members doing section 2 will drive to the change over point at the end of section 1 to await the team members walking that section.  They will then swap over when the team members doing section 1 finish – they'll then drive to the end of section 2 etc.  We provide detailed maps and Sat Nav locations for each change over point to make it nice and simple for drivers to find them.

What is the route like? Can you send me a map?

The WolfTrek route is simply stunning, covering a microcosm of Highland terrain. Find out more here. The WolfTrek route was created by the WildHearts team and cannot be found on any public map but copies of our own top secret map may be available to registered participants upon request.  NB You do not have to be able to map read to take part in the event.  The route is clearly signposted and patrolled by event marshals but participants will be provided with printed route maps on the day of the event in the unlikely event that they do need it.

Are there rest stops?

There are three main Rest Stops along the route which feature toilets, a rest area and a food preparation area.  NB It is not possible to camp/sleep at the Rest Stops. Staying awake until you complete the event is part of the challenge!

Do we need to bring our own food?

Yes. The WildHearts team will provide water, isotonic drinks and energy snacks for participants at each Rest Stop, but participants will need to carry food for their own meals. There will also be water and snack stations at least every six miles along the route where participants can quench their thirst and refuel. We send all registered participants an Event Guide which details the types of food they might like to bring.

Do we need any specialist equipment?

Participants need to wear good quality walking clothing and boots/shoes.  You also need to bring a head-torch, mobile phone and water bottle plus some other small items.  We send all registered participants an Event Guide which details the types of equipment they should bring.
