Section 1: Dallas Dhu to Dava

Wt Route 2 of 2

The WolfTrek starts in Forres, near Inverness in Scotland. Set in rolling farm land nurtured by the warm micro-climate of the Moray Coast, this is the perfect place to begin your epic journey across the Highlands. Your odyssey begins on the Dava Way, a walking trail that mirrors the route of the old Highland Railway. Beginning at sea level you will set off across lush countryside, dipping in and out of woodland, crossing the majestic Divie Viaduct and edging into the Dava Moor. You'll also pass historic Dallas Dhu; a distillery typical of those built around 1900 to quench the ever increasing thirst for Scotland’s national drink, which remains a beautifully preserved example of the distiller’s art. Emerging at the tiny settlement of Dava at night-fall you will steel yourself to cross the ancient lands of the Wolf of Badenoch, seeped in turmoil and tragedy, shrouded in mist and mystery. Section 2: Dava to Nethy Bridge

WT Route 2 photo 2

Infamous lord of the desolate lands you are about to cross, one of the most notorious villains in Scottish history, the Wolf of Badenoch's presence lingers malevolently over the Dava Moor. A medieval laird who terrorised the region, sacking villages and torching Elgin cathedral, legend holds that the Wolf was last seen playing chess with the devil for his soul. Are his lands really haunted? You’ll find out as you set off across the pristine wilderness of the remote and desolate Dava Moor. Whilst a midnight meeting with wolves is perhaps unlikely, you may well encounter the current occupiers, including golden eagles and ospreys. And, if in the dark of the night you hear a shriek it will probably be a black grouse…or will it? Having made it across the moor you will pass through the Georgian town of Grantown on Spey and join the famous Speyside Way as it meanders alongside Scotland’s fastest flowing river. The landscape becomes gentler here as you make your way to Nethy Bridge, nestling on the edge of Abernethy Forest.

Section 3: Nethy Bridge to Cairngorm

Wt Route 3 pt 2

The final section of the WolfTrek includes some of the most dramatic scenery of the route as you approach the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. From Nethy Bridge you enter Abernethy Forest, one of the last remnants of the ancient Caledonian pine forest that once covered Scotland and home to an incredible abundance of wildlife, including the iconic capercaillie. Upon leaving the forest you will follow the trail across exposed Ryvoan Pass, tracing a route used by cattle rustlers during the time of Rob Roy. Dipping into Glenmore Forest you'll skirt the emerald waters of the Green Lochan and weave your way through towering pines. Emerging from the trees your final challenge awaits; tackling the twisting Alt Mor Trail up the gully to the ski station on Cairngorm Mountain. Tough, demanding and oh-so-steep, this is a fitting end to the WolfTrek challenge! A heroes welcome awaits you at the Cas Bar where you can relax and toast your success with your fellow wolves, soaking up the staggering views of the alpine valley below.
